About MIB: our purpose and funding

MIB is a not-for-profit organisation making roads safer by tackling uninsured and hit-and-run driving.

We’ve been here since 1946

In that time, we’ve supported hundreds of thousands of people financially, emotionally and practically to rebuild their lives after accidents or collisions with uninsured and untraced drivers, and foreign-registered vehicles.

But our big ambition is a world where uninsured driving is a thing of the past. We believe this is important because uninsured driving isn't just a traffic offence. It’s a public safety crisis that devastates lives and costs the UK £1 billion a year.

Ending uninsured driving. For good

Our vision is to end uninsured driving so that one day there will be no more victims, our roads will be safer, and there will be fairer motor insurance premiums for all. Our Accelerating to Zero strategy lays out how we’ll get closer to achieving it.

Fighting uninsured and hit-and-run driving, and supporting people through the devastation it causes is only part of what we do

Through partnership with the motor insurance industry, we manage data services and centralised records that help people and organisations with information about their insurance, such as the centralised record of all insured vehicles in the UK, and vehicles that have been previously written-off or stolen.

Through industry partnerships, we support education, intervention and enforcement initiatives that reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the roads and change the nation’s attitudes towards uninsured driving.

We may have been around for 80 years, but driving evolves, and so does MIB. We’re at the forefront of the conversation about the future of motor insurance, including autonomous and connected vehicles.

How is MIB funded?

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, anyone who is injured by a motor vehicle must be able to claim compensation. MIB exists as a not-for-profit organisation to fulfil this obligation.

The compensation we provide to victims of uninsured and hit-and-run drivers is funded by the motor insurance industry through a compulsory membership levy for every insurer and underwriter issuing motor insurance. That cost ends up being covered by other motorists through their insurance premiums.

How we're run

MIB manages or provides services to other organisations that have positive impact on the public, insurance industry and the government.
