Accelerating to Zero
Every twenty minutes, someone in the UK is the victim of an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. Every week, at least one person is killed. It has to end. For good.
For 80 years, MIB has helped people rebuild their lives after collisions caused by uninsured and hit-and-run drivers. But we know that in simply managing claims, we’re not dealing with the problem early enough because uninsured drivers still wreck lives. And it’s getting harder to solve.
We're committed to ending uninsured driving. For good.
Research tells us there are 335,000 uninsured vehicles driving on UK roads on any given day. But the issue isn’t just about insurance. Every twenty minutes, someone in the UK is the victim of an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. Every week, at least one person is killed. Every day, at least one person is injured so seriously that they need life-long care.
Uninsured driving wrecks lives. The cost of supporting these victims is paid for by motorists in their premiums. We don’t think that’s fair.
That’s why our vision is to end uninsured driving so that one day there will be no more victims, our roads will be safer, and there will be fairer motor insurance premiums for all.
It’s a big ambition. Accelerating to Zero lays out how we’re working with the insurance industry, the government and partners to get closer to making this ambition a reality.
How we’re making this happen
We're focusing on four areas.
Stopping uninsured driving before it starts
Uninsured driving isn't just a traffic offence. It’s a public safety crisis that devastates lives and costs the UK £1 billion a year.
But the impact is more than numbers. Physical pain, time away from family, emotional trauma, financial worries. Victims of uninsured driving have their lives turned upside down.
We believe every claim is avoidable so we’re shifting our focus from enforcement to education and prevention – with data and driver insight at the heart. So we can stop uninsured driving before it starts.
Doing even more to help people rebuild their lives
No one whose life has been changed by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver should be left without the support they deserve.
So while we work to prevent uninsured driving, we’ll keep helping people rebuild their lives with a claims service that’s fair, efficient and compassionate. We’ll also keep improving how we handle claims and deepen capability, so we can support more people and share our expertise with members in the UK and internationally.
Making sure data drives the good we do
Accelerating to Zero will only succeed if it is underpinned by data. So we must make sure ours is of the highest quality
We have an opportunity to be the most trusted source of reliable, secure and timely data for the insurance industry and law enforcement. If we can achieve this, we can to deepen our claims capabilities, improve outcomes for customers, prevent fraud and reduce risk across the insurance industry.
Preparing for the future of driving
Driving is changing. Connected and autonomous vehicles are already here, and one day they will be the norm.
The data they generate will create new opportunities to prevent uninsured driving. But they will also bring new risks, including cyber threats, privacy concerns and changes in how responsibility is shared. We’ll help the industry respond and work with government and partners to make sure these changes happen safely.
